Kannel is a very powerful open source WAP and SMS gateway, used widely across the world both for pushing millions of short messages (SMS) and pushing WAP messages.

Kannel is an open source WAP gateway. Kannel also works as an SMS Gateway for GSM networks. Almost all GSM phones can send and receive SMS messages, so this is a way to serve many more clients than just those using a WAP phone. The main use for Kannel is to link HTTP based services to various SMS centers using obscure protocols.

Kannel is a efficacious tool for bulk sms providers and those who want to set up their own sms connectivity for their business and services.

When used as an SMS gateway, Kannel can receive messages from one or more SMS centers and convert them into HTTP requests. It also has an HTTP interface for sending messages back to the SMS centers, and it can send text responses directly from a configuration file. Kannel can also exchange messages with a mobile phone or GSM modem, in effect using it as an SMS center.

We @ mobme use Kannel for pushing all our sms from FastAlerts to various SMCs.

Kannel supports the following sms center configurations

  • Nokia CIMD 1.37 and 2.0
  • CMG UCP/EMI 4.0 and 3.5
  • SMPP 3.4
  • Sema Group SMS2000 OIS 4.0, 5.0 and 5.8
  • SM/ASI (for CriticalPath InVoke SMS Center 4.x)

Kannel has an HTTP interface through which we can send sms and can manage various user accounts in the configuration file. The only disadvantage is that Kannel does not have a billing system along with it.
